History

With over four decades in practice, Filion Wakely Thorup Angeletti LLP has evolved to become a leading authority in our field. Our roots trace back to 1953 when Ferguson, Montgomery, Cassels and Mitchell established a full-service law firm in Toronto. Early on, the Firm developed a strong presence in labour law, laying the foundation for what would become one of Canada’s leading management-side labour and employment law practices.

In 1982, Roy Filion, Q.C., Warren K. Winkler and David I. Wakely, set out independently to form Winkler, Filion & Wakely, which was dedicated exclusively to representing employers in all aspects of labour and employment law. Under the leadership of Roy Filion, Q.C., the Firm quickly earned a reputation for excellence in providing proactive and personalized legal solutions.

Just over a decade later, the Honourable Warren K. Winkler was appointed to what is now the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. Following his appointment in 1993, the Firm expanded its reach to include Southwestern Ontario by opening an office in London and adding Peter Thorup to its name as Filion, Wakely & Thorup. Soon after, the Firm honoured Frank Angeletti’s contributions as a partner in the London office and became Filion Wakely Thorup Angeletti LLP.

Over the years, the Firm has continued to grow, opening a third office in Hamilton in 2013 and a fourth office in Kitchener-Waterloo in 2022. Today, with over 50 lawyers across four offices, Filion maintains its legacy by continuing to support employers with innovative legal solutions in an ever-changing workplace landscape.

Equity,
Diversity &

Inclusion

Filion is a place where people from all backgrounds can feel safe, valued, and free to be themselves. We are dedicated to fostering equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) across every part of our Firm—within our team, in how we serve our clients, and throughout the communities where we live and work.

Creating a diverse and inclusive workplace begins with active listening and a commitment to building a culture that welcomes everyone. We strive to cultivate an environment where all team members feel supported and encouraged to share their ideas, voice concerns, and contribute to meaningful change. By embracing a wide range of perspectives, we strengthen our internal practices and create a more dynamic and inclusive workplace for all.

Our Culture and Diversity Committee leads the Firm’s efforts in advancing these goals. To learn more about our EDI initiatives, please reach out to Bonnea Channe.
